Facebook Timeline 2011 New Profile

Well two bin nights in one week LOL ;-)

The big news is that Facebook have launched their newest upgrade to what we have always known as the Profile, and have now called it the Timeline. Essentially making Facebook all about me! Well you … you know what I mean. It is a total reflection of everything that you have added to Facebook over the years, a true “Expression of Yourself”.

I am actually really starting to like the Timeline already …

What does this mean for Facebook Pages … at this stage no changes are planned except for the Friends Activity that was added to our page menus. But I predict that the page upgrades will follow shortly after. At least that is how they brought in the big page upgrade last time. And besides you don’t introduce a funky new profile design to have no plans for business pages …

And then you have Google+ launching their business pages “soon” so that is when I believe Fb will reveal their new page designs. Get set for another learning curve gang… sorry!

You are telling me all the time lately that Facebook changes too often, they force you to spend more time figuring out the platform than actually marketing your business and it is driving you insane.

I heard you and I have created a program to help support you  while you use Facebook for business. With more than 30,000+ fans I am constantly being asked for help, as people just don’t know where else to turn. So I would like to introduce to you … Facebook Roadside Assist.

Now you can let someone else worry about working out how, where and why things have changed and you can get on with focusing on marketing your business on the worlds largest marketing place.

I have also made a couple of tutorials about the major changes to the security settings on Facebook and these are available free of charge when you access the members log in area.

Managing Facebook Changes

There have been more major updates to the Facebook platform this week. And as my friend Jen Sheehan says, “Facebook changes every time you put the bins out”, well it was bin night here last night …

So I just thought I would take a minute to encourage you to embrace the new Facebook changes. It can be very frustrating but that is what comes with being allowed to use the worlds largest networking site for free. There are many hacks flying around on how to get the old look back etc … these are short lived solutions as the roll out of updates is delivered to different regions at a time, and all regions will have the update within 24 to 48 hours.

Actually it has been my experience over the past 3 years working on the network that ultimately the changes are always a huge improvement. Sometimes you have to take time to find where they put things or can’t figure out why they have implemented something, but the reality is that we can’t change it and ultimately the changes have turned out to be great.

I will confess I too find it frustrating looking for something and discovering it is gone forever and I don’t like everything for example this time I hate the ticker … but you know that team over at Facebook, like them or not, they do a great job. So my advice to you is to embrace the changes and don’t let them bug you too much.

What are your thoughts, will you be embracing the changes?

Facebook Ads – Learn Facebook Advertising

Facebook Ads has been a hot topic for a very long time … it is like the holy grail of social media.

If you don’t know what it is, I have added a screen shot for you. It’s those sometimes pesky and sometimes intriguing little images and text ads that appear all over Facebook. What is the difference between a pesky ad and an intriguing ad?

The answer to that lies in experience, remember it is not a magic wand, it is a marketing ‘tool’ that needs to be used the right way to generate the optimal results possible. Anyone can do it but it is the people who spend some time to learn how to use the tools available to them that have the most success.

For those who use it or have tried it, you know that there is a degree of skill involved, and simply deciding one morning to use FB Ads for massive traffic isn’t going to work for you. I mean do you even know the one thing that is the most important part of your ad … yes there is just one thing that can make or break your ad campaign. And did you know there are things you cannot advertise? Then on top of that; is Facebook advertising for everyone? … Sure it is! Or is it?

I called the only person who I believe truly has the answers and asked her a few questions. Jen Sheahan of Fb Ads Lab provides a complete Done for You service to high end marketers like Frank Kern and James Schramko. Earlier this year Jen launched her Insights program that is designed to teach the reset of us ;) how to do our own Facebook Ads. Listen in on my call to Jen:

Facebook Seagulls, Pelicans and Vultures

After enjoying 5 computer-free days, I returned to my Facebook business page to find a number of introductions on my page by new fans. I always love hearing from people keen to learn my Facebook marketing advice… Well, except when it is seagull droppings.

Facebook Seagulls… Introduce yourself and get noticed

For those of you who missed our 3-day wall post discussion about Facebook seagulls, let me enlighten you. A Facebook seagull is someone who likes your page and then craps on your wall.

More often than not, the seagulls either don’t know how to introduce themselves properly or think they are in fact being polite by saying “Hi, new fan. We are having a sale blah blah blah”. So I am just putting it out there that this spam.

Think about it – if you were at weekend sport watching your kids and you introduce yourself to other players’ parents, they say, “Hi! My name is [insert name here], we are having a sale and would love it if you stopped by. Oh! And bring a friend.” How fast do you think you would run in the other direction?

So here are the Facebook marketing keys to introducing yourself on someone’s Facebook business page and get noticed:

  • Learn to write an engaging hello message without needing to promote your business
  • Use your face as your page avatar
  • Engage with other pages as your Facebook business page
  • Don’t be desperate, it comes across
  • Have a purpose for joining the page. Otherwise, you only have “hope marketing,” you hope someone will follow your link and like your page
  • Provide value and be engaged with others

Most seagulls just don’t know better and aren’t intending to “crap” on your wall. But Facebook Pelicans are a different bird altogether!

Facebook Pelicans… Cleaning your wall

Well, the Facebook Pelican has bigger crap, and they come back just about every day. Their intention is just to mess on your wall for their own gain. They have no desire to add value to your page. Unfortunately, they just don’t realize no one pays attention to their crappy messages.

This style of Facebook Marketing is worse than just hoping for success. It is random and untargeted resulting in unengaged fans.

Don’t feel bad deleting their crap from your wall. Issue a warning by private message if you like, but remember, your business page is part of your business brand and you need to protect it. However, it is Facebook Vultures that you have to look out for.

Facebook Vultures… Zero tolerance

They seem innocent enough and rarely spam your wall directly. They comment to every post you and others write, trying to steal fans from your page. The last thing you want is to spend the day writing an important blog post only to have a Facebook Vulture comment to your wall post with something like “another great thing you can use is here www…” and linking away from your page.

Don’t accept this behavior. Not only can you delete their comments, you can permanently ban them from your page.

Facebook Seagulls, Pelicans and Vultures can make you an angry bird ;-) (sorry had to put that in) but like all aspects of your Facebook marketing, have a purpose, policy and plan in place to manage these page pests.

If you identify with any of these types, it is never too late to improve your Facebook marketing strategy.
